Thinking about what to wear…

Practising yoga needn’t break the bank when it comes to the clothes you wear. Generally, you’ll need to be wearing comfortable clothing that you can move in. But what does that actually mean? We tend to say comfortable to mean things like - your clothes shouldn’t restrict your movement, or you don’t want zips and buttons which will be uncomfortable to lie on. But comfortable should also mean at a cost you can afford, and something you can feel emotionally comfortable in - not everyone is happy in lycra.

So what are your options when it comes to what to wear in class?

A t-shirt and leggings, or jogging bottoms is a good place to start. Something that is designed for yoga or some kind of fitness wear will be better - you want something that won’t become uncomfortable when you sweat - so cotton fabrics or fitness wear that ‘wicks’ away water will be better.

You don’t need to wear skin tight clothing if you don’t want to, but have a look at what options there are. Bear in mind that even if you’re not doing full inversions like headstands or handstands, you will more than likely bend down at some point, so you want a top that won’t drop down over your face! You’ll also want to pay attention to waist bands - any that are quite bulky might be a problem.

And don’t forget to think about your underwear. If you wear a bra, then you’ll be better in a softer sports bra, which will help you both move and breathe more easily than in an everyday bra. And look for pants that are supportive but won’t chafe.

Lastly, consider layers. You’ll want options for summer and winter but even in summer you may get cold during relaxation, so being able to put on a sweatshirt and socks afterwards will be helpful. Of course there’s always a blanket instead!
