Finding new ways to be present

This last week I’ve not been feeling on top form and so have been taking it a bit easier. I found a colour by numbers app (totally falling for an advert) and got right into it. I’ve been enjoying seeing how the different colours make up a picture, paying attention to the different shades, sizes, shapes, trying to make sure I’ve picked up the smallest area - zooming in. In particular I’ve been enjoying the mystery option where there’s no lines to give away what the picture is, so you really see the image unfold, and have to decide where to start. All in all I’ve been finding enjoyment in the concentration at a time when my head’s been feeling foggy.

However, what I’ve also realised is that there’s a bit of a downside. It’s increased my screen time, my shoulders are feeling tight because of the repetitive action and I’m coming to the conclusion that it’s probably not a good option for relaxation in the long run!

I’m reminded that although apps can be useful support to be mindful, find focus or relax, we do have other tools to be present that don’t involve screen time.

I’m lucky enough to live in an area where I can easily go for a walk in the woods, or down to the beach. If I want to enjoy how different colours come together, I can look at the colours in nature and all the subtleties there are there. If anything, that’s more to marvel at.

I’ll still enjoy the colour by numbers app, but won’t be the only way I find time to be present and I’ll make sure I include physical practice to open up my chest and shoulders too!
